Veterinary professionals are at elevated risk for wellbeing and mental health problems. They have as much as a five-fold increased risk of suicide compared with the general public. One in six veterinarians contemplate suicide during their careers.
Not One More Vet (NOMV) is focused on wellbeing, mental health, and crisis intervention in the veterinary community. We will transform the status of mental wellness within the profession so veterinary professionals can survive and thrive through education, resources, and support.
Dr. Nicole McArthur created the NOMV Facebook group in October 2014 following the death by suicide of the world-renowned veterinarian, Dr. Sophia Yin. News reports in the days that followed Dr. Yin’s passing brought into stark focus the alarming rates of suicide in the veterinary profession. In that moment, many came to realize that veterinary medicine can be very isolating and that so many veterinary professionals around the world are struggling with the day-to-day realities of practice.
From that grassroots beginning, NOMV has grown into a massive peer-to-peer network providing support for veterinary professionals around the world. In 2017, NOMV became a 501(c)3 charity, allowing the organization to expand its programing to include wellness education and financial support for its members. Today NOMV is expanding rapidly to become a leader in veterinary wellness and mental health resources.
NOMV serves every member of the veterinary community with support services including: vet tech students, veterinary students, support staff, vet techs, and veterinarians.
We also serve pet parents with education and empathy for the wellbeing of the veterinary teams that keep their beloved pets safe and healthy.
NOMV addresses wellbeing in veterinary medicine through multiple innovative pathways including: Educational Program providing leadership focused on wellness; Support Grant Program providing immediate financial support; a partnership with BetterHelp, providing one month of Free Psychotherapy; a partnership with the University of Tennessee and Auburn University to develop an Online Crisis Support System specifically designed for veterinary professionals; and Research to further the advancement of wellness, mental health, and the reduction of suicide in veterinary professionals.
With your fiscal support, we can create a robust organization that responds rapidly to the needs of its members, leads the industry in wellness education, and innovates solutions for veterinary mental health. Invest in NOMV today!
“I have felt a great relief having support from NOMV. The funds I received were able to get me caught up on my mortgage and that was huge. I’m still struggling with the rest life has to offer, but knowing my most important financial obligation is back on track is a wonderful feeling. I am so blessed to have been guided to the NOMV grant and the simplicity and easy communication. Thank you for providing this service and for helping the veterinary community. ” – Kelly
“I was a 2020 graduate in the middle of the COVID pandemic. I still had not been able to secure a job yet and the sale of my house had fallen through. I had just moved states and on the move down a large piece of metal from the road was kicked up into my vehicle’s undercarriage totalling the head gasket, radiator, compressor, etc. The vehicle was totaled, I was living in a small camper as I was going to use the money from the sale of the house as rent money. I reached out to NOMV because I was desperate and did not know where to turn. They were so helpful and kind. They helped me by paying a large balance on a bill I had due that was going to begin accruing interest. This kind act allowed me to have enough money to buy an inexpensive car so I would have means of transportation. I did end up getting a job and things are looking up. I hope one day to be able to pay back NOMV for all the help they have given me.” – Anonymous
